Film Review: The Matrix

The Matrix

Blockbuster movie that is heavy on action, lacking in characters, and convoluted in plot.

If I were writing it, I would have started with none of the characters knowing what the Matrix was, and when they learn, we learn about them. Instead, we have Lawrence Fishburne telling us what it is. Very uninteresting.

The premise itself isn't that new. How many times must we see an evil Artificial Intelligence? However, it is smarter than most, and sets it in a recognizable world. This lends to it's vast appeal (the special FX didn't hurt, either.)

The special effects and computer graphics were groundbreaking, and it has a strong plus in that it should rekindle an interest with in Science Fiction, especially when combined with

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

This movie I still have hope for, especially with USC alum George Lucas still caring about moviemaking.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
I haven't seen it yet, and I will, once the rush is over.

I have heard from my movie industry contacts that it received a lukewarm reception. But from sneaks from the fans, it seems to be excellent.

In my opinion, it can only be compared to the original three. I suspect it will have a hard time living up since these were so groundbreaking.
